words and photos by Rob Underwood – Kandooma Resort surf guide

The life as a surf guide on a tropical island is not always as glamorous as it seems. Week-long flat spells, onshore winds and monsoon rains can turn the world’s best job into “just another job”.

Well… lucky for me, the last 2 weeks have been nothing short of amazing. Lucky for our The Perfect Wave guests who booked during September also. These guests were looking to sacrifice a drop in swell for shoulder season crowds, however, SCORED BIG TIME!!

Kandooma Right, firing

Low crowds, favourable winds and 2-week long swells back-to-back have produced some of the best waves we have had all year.

Dean and Anna from Victoria booked a family villa for themselves and 2 kids for 2 weeks and have awakened every day, looked out from their beachfront verandah to see perfect 4-6 foot Kandooma Right. The right-hand point on the island has been so good they have not even bothered to take a boat trip to the neighbouring breaks.

Those guests who have ventured out on our The Perfect Wave dhonis have all surfed Riptides, Quarters and Tucky Joe’s all as good as they get.

I have surfers staying on the island who have been surfing 6+ hours in the water every day, and as a guide I love seeing my guests dribbling on themselves at dinner because they don’t even have the energy to talk!!

The Perfect Wave is now offering morning and afternoon yoga sessions which have been helping to keep surfers and their partners stretched and relaxed to make even more out of their perfect holiday experience.

I’m counting down to 1 more month left on the resort before the end of the season. With the winds getting lighter and another swell on the horizon, I think they are going to have to drag me out of here kicking and screaming!!
