Introducing your grommets to surfing, or even taking semi-accomplished groms or your partner surfing means hardcore search and destroy missions are on the backburner for a while.

Priorities change, the quality of the accommodation, food and entertainment may become more important for family harmony than guaranteed tube time.

The closest vegetarian restaurant more important than the proximity of the closest nightclub, cool bars avoided, rather than sought after, air-con used more than the mini-bar. You get my drift?

First things first, way back on my inaugural family/surf trip when my boy was only 5 and barely standing on an over-sized foamie, it soon dawned on me that I wouldn’t be able to spend 6 or 8 hours in the water like back in the day. These days I think strategically.

Let me suggest a location where you can get up for the dawn patrol at 6am and make it back by 9-ish for a fantastic, extensive, delicious family breakfast. Greet the family with kisses and “I thought you guys would appreciate a sleep in” before joining them for an extended breakfast overlooking the point or the reef.

I can’t think of anything worse than being stranded somewhere with nothing to entertain the kids and/or partner, apart from your own self-indulgent stories of your pre-breakfast surf. Going surfing, if you pick the right family resort, needn’t be a selfish pursuit.

The best part of my suggested family holiday & surf trip is picking a venue that also has a few grom-friendly surf options so you can take your kids into the line-up with you at times too. Not to mention the kids club, yoga, multiple restaurants and bars, 3 pools, diving, 6 nearby waves…. the list goes on.

Kandooma is the ideal venue for all. You won’t be disappointed – no one ever is. There has been some impressive renovations at Kandooma. A slick, new beach bar has been built, there’s some great new day beds to watch the surf between sessions and kids club has been refurbished and additional water slides added to the pools.

The designer “Splash Pool”, one of the biggest kids pools in Maldives, is officially open now daily from 8am to 6pm. It features low wading pool, water slides, water cannons, spray wall and it wouldn’t be the same without the water tipping buckets to keep the kids actively entertained and cool.]
