For those of you that couldn’t make it last Wednesday June 24, The Perfect Wave held a very successful fundraiser for A Liquid Future at The Tipple Bar and Bistro in Surry Hills.
A Liquid Future is a non-profit organisation that provides free empowerment programmes in English, environmental practices, swimming and surfing to help Mentawai locals achieve a sustainable balance between the environment and growing surf tourism in isolated island communities in the Mentawai , Indonesia.
The storytelling and banter between godfather of surf celluloid- Jack McCoy and Australia’s favourite all time surfer Mark Occhilupo was the highlight, followed by a screening of Occumentary and an informal auction hosted by The Perfect Wave’s CEO – Jamie Gray.
Occy does two trips with The Perfect Wave annually, both to regions he loves dearly – the Maldives and Mentawai. There’s still spots available on Occ’s upcoming September and October 2015 trips, so click on the link for the chance to surf and hang out with the legend himself on holidays. Mark has kind of evolved into a TPW ambassador of late. He happily devoted his time the day before his very own Öccy Grom Comp was due to kick off on the Gold Coast to help A Liquid Future and for that we are all indebted to both he and Jack. Thanks guys.
A bunch of other crew also helped us out with donations for the auction and door prizes, so I really want to acknowledge and thank each and every one of them right now also.
Big thanks to Johnny at Chaos who donated a custom shaped and sprayed Chaos surfboard, Timmy at Aloha who donated an Aloha board, Barton Lynch, Saltmotion Gallery Manly, Bainy at Surfing Life mag, Matty at Carve eyewear, Matty Grainger – Manly Surf School, Johnny Dowse at Rip Curl, Jaque and Andrew @ Kwikkopy Chatswood, Stretcheyz, Muchado Clothing and UFC gym.
Thanks so much to the businesses and friends of The Perfect Wave who donated and thanks to each and every individual who attended and paid $30 a head towards A Liquid Future.
We raised over $15,200 on Wednesday night and together with the $6,500 we raised at an office fundraiser at our Brookvale HQ a few months back, that makes $21, 700 we can send direct to Lizzie, the founder of A Liquid Future.
Jamie, Marie and family from The Perfect Wave did a trip over in February when the Collaboration Centre was officially opened by the Minister of Tourism and there are now close to 200 students enrolled between the ages of 6 and 60 all striving to learn!
We will be hosting another A Liquid Future night later this year and would love to see you there, but if not and you are able to assist with either auction items or making an online donation, every little bit helps and will make a huge difference in a part of the world that wants to connect and be part of the future of the Mentawai!
Thank you everybody.
We will keep you posted with any upcoming events and images of when Occy visits the centre in September this year.
