East Indo: What Else Is Out There?🗺️
East Indonesia and Sumba are quickly becoming the go-to destinations for surfers looking for a new Indo adventure and score uncrowded waves during the season.
Recently, one of our team members, Lachy, explored this incredible area aboard the Sri Noa Noa charter and experienced the beauty and solitude these waves offer.
“Having visited popular Indo destinations like the Mentawais, Nias, and Sumbawa, the goal this time was to find uncrowded waves. So, we went a little further, took a bit longer, and rolled the dice—and it all paid off when it was just us in the water.”
“We surfed waves we’d never heard of—some didn’t even have names, and there were definitely no clips on YouTube to preview.
The mystique and lack of information were all part of the charm. I wouldn’t say we were pioneering new waters, but it felt adventurous and raw.
The limited information on Sumba kept our expectations low, which was the perfect mindset going into the trip.”– Lachy

“Being on a boat allowed us to cover a huge stretch of coastline, making a clockwise loop around the island. We often traveled at night, during windy periods, and when the tide wasn’t ideal. We’d refuel, catch a quick snooze while on the move, and wake up to the sound of the anchor dropping at a new spot.”
At one point, we questioned how many people might have surfed this wave—if anyone had, ever. This particular spot was accessible only by boat and would be a massive mission for any land camp or speedboat. The captain didn’t name it, and we wondered how many more secrets lay ahead of us.
“Even in this line of work, where surf knowledge is everything, we had to laugh, knowing we’d never be able to find that wave again on our own.” – Lachy
