One of he most prestigious surf contests in the world, the US Open of Surfing takes place every year at the end of July next to the iconic Huntington Beach pier in the heart of Southern California. So, we thought this would be the perfect time to fill you in on The Perfect Wave’s partner programs in Surf City, USA.

Huntington Beach surf holiday should be on every surfer’s list…

Huntington Beach became the birthplace of the sport in mainland America after Hawaii’s George Freeth gave the first ever wave-riding demonstration there in 1914, followed by a visit from the father of modern surfing Duke Kahanamoku in 1922. Competitive surfing started in Huntington in late 1950s at the West Coast Surfing Championship, which became the United States Surfing Championships in the mid-60s, then the OP Pro in the early 80s and has been the US Open of Surfing since the mid-90s. It is also home to the Surfing Walk of Fame and Hall of Fame.

Main Street, Huntington Beach is the ground zero of Southern Californian surf culture. There are surf shops galore, and so many great places to eat, drink and be merry it’ll make your head spin. As far as the waves are concerned, Huntington Beach is all about sand bottom beach breaks. From the Cliffs in the North, to the Pier, Magnolia Street, Bolsa Chiac and the River Jetties in the South, there is a plethora of peaks to choose from depending on the sand bars, the tide, the swell and wind direction. No matter what time of year it is, you will always find a fun wave somewhere in Surf City. Other famous Californian spots, like Rincon, Malibu, and Trestles are all a relatively short drive from Huntington Beach as well.

Outside of surfing, there are so many things to do there are literally guidebooks full of them. Disneyland, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Catalina island, world class golf courses, wine tasting, and pretty much anything else you can think of to do are all easily accessible from Huntington Beach.

As far as the accommodations go, Huntington Beach offers a variety of options.

The Luxurious beachfront Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa, features its own surf school, board rental service and a connecting bridge over the Pacific Coast Highway that drops you right on the sand.

Located in the heart of town, the Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel, is a boutique hotel that breathes surf culture with wetsuits lining the lobby wall and a surfboard rack to store/borrow boards.

The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, is a great choice for families, and all Surfboard rentals and lessons can go through Waterfront Adventures, located right on the sand.

Huntington Beach in California should be on every surfer’s list. Whether you have not been there yet, or want to visit again, get in touch with The Perfect Wave and we’ll look after your trip.
