Would you drop everything to score this wave? – photo Joel Coleman

The key element to scoring good waves on your travels is all about being in the right place at the right time. Equally important in your quest to maximize surf time on your journey is choosing an ideal location with a successful surf management plan in place.

PNG is one such destination.

When the Indian Ocean season winds down in late October, PNG’s surf season is only just beginning. PNG is an extremely interesting country for a surfer looking for the ultimate authentic island cultural experience.

With so much talk and speculation about Maldives exclusivity, the key to PNG’s appeal is its successful surf management plan.

November to February are the prime months. Joel Coleman did a trip with The Perfect Wave in February 2014 and scored epic perfection.

It is kind of ironic that in the eyes of the modern world, many consider PNG to be quite ancient by virtue of contrasting landscapes, its people and old customs.

However, when it comes to surfing, PNG is at the cutting edge with a new world approach to ensuring an equitable and sustainable foundation upon which the surfing resource is developed and managed for the collective benefit of its traditional resource custodians, SAPNG affiliated surf clubs and commercial operators.

Working together, the SAPNG developed a unique and defining feature that crystallizes a truly memorable PNG surfing experience – Surf Management Plan (SMP). This plan recognizes traditional rights, ensures there are sustainable quotas to avoid surfer overcrowding. It also promotes conservation and awareness of the marine environment.

With a surf charter PNG Explorer discovering remote waves off New Hannover, Manus and Boganville, 2 remote surf lodges in New Ireland (Rubio and Nusa Island Retreat) and Vanimo Surf Lodge in PNG’s north-west, we have Papua New Guinea covered.

PNG sells out early and January is nearly full for all operations, so now is the time to choose the suitable dates, organize mates and start getting excited for your next surf trip.

Hope to see you over in Papua New Guinea,
