Paredon Surf House (PSH) was the dream house of two surfers, James and Christoph, who had been coming to Paredon for the excellent surf for years. In 2008 they began building the surf house, which was soon filled by all of their friends. Then, in 2010 they decided to open their weekend retreat as a surf camp and guest house, not only for surfers but for anyone searching for an alternative to the crowded tourist beaches of Guatemala. As their vision for the hotel grew, they added two private beachfront bungalows, a pool, a rustic gourmet menu, and a variety of activities. In June 2010, they opened the hotel to the public to rave reviews.

Not long afterward, Mathias, a good friend and the original manager of PSH, joined on as a full partner. As a result, the hotel was expanded and two further beachfront bungalows were built, as well as the two seaview suites with private bathrooms. While PSH has grown a bit in size, the soul of the place is still just as it ever was: a great little place for all their friends to enjoy!

The Paredon Surf House family makes it a special place and is comprised of some wonderful Paredon locals and our live-in manager. Yoli, born and raised in the village, is the chef and successfully blends the best of local cuisine with western dishes. Yoli's husband, Yille, is the highly-skilled caretaker. He is a former fisherman and coconut picker who helped build Paredon Surf House. Yoli and Yille help us manager a whole team of great local staff who will surely make you feel instantly at home!

Accommodation

In the main building, PSH offers a spacious and airy surf camp inspired group loft with 8 beds on the upper floor. There are four private beachfront bungalows on stilts, each with a double and single bed. Additionally, they have two Seaview Suites  with private bathrooms, each with a double bed and single bed. Additional mattresses can be provided where needed.

In total, PSH can sleep 26 guests. All beds have high-quality mattresses and pillows and new, large mosquito netting. The house is very open and is designed to maximise the sea breeze. While fans are provided for those especially hot nights, they’re not often needed.

With oversized Asian-style thatched-roof “skylights” in the group loft and beachfront bungalows, and huge folding doors in the suites, all of their accommodation offer superb ocean views. From the group loft, the North-facing skylight offers views of the volcanoes Agua, Acatenango, and Fuego.

There are two spacious house bathrooms to share amongst the group loft and the beachfront bungalows. These stone structures are partially covered by thatched roofs with showers open to the sky – the perfect place for a private refreshing, moonlit shower. Green plants and flowers abound in and around our bathrooms, and PSH believes that they are some of the most beautiful bathrooms in Guatemala. Go and judge for yourself!

Surf & Other Activities

Enjoy the most consistent surf in Guatemala at Paredon Surf House. The expansive black-sand beach break directly in front of the house is never, ever crowded, and with a ton of exposure the beach picks up just about every swell that rolls along the Pacific and over to Guatemala. Typical wave heights are chest- to head-high from November to April, and head-high plus from May to October. The break works on anything from a knee-high to double-overhead swell, and there is rarely a day without something to surf.

El Pardon offers surf boards (long and short boards) and boogie boards for rent (including rash guards, wax and fins for boogie boarding) and organise surf lessons through their surf school.

Apart from splashing around in the waves you can relax in the freshwater swimming pool or in the hammocks in the shade of the ranchos and palm trees. For those who like a little more activity, the camp has an official-size beach volleyball court and an ocean-view swing. They also offer a number of other activities on request:

• Boat tour with bird watching in the mangrove natural reserve. The main season for bird watching is October to January; but a tour through the mangroves is a great experience any time of the year!

• Get to know the local turtles with nighttime sea turtle watching, visits to the local sea turtle centre, and visits to the major turtle cove “Posa del Nance” (the breeding season is from June to November).

• Ocean fishing

• Horseback riding

Irena (February 2016)
The camp is great and the location is perfect, just on the sea. Very relaxing and peaceful. The staff is very nice and the camp has a good vibe. Perfect spot for surfing, I'm taking surf lessons with local guy, arranged via camp, it's really good. I love it. El Paredon village is very rural, with pigs running free, etc.:)

If you haven't been here yet, I will recommend. It's one of the places that in a few years time won't be so peaceful, as more and more people are interested to come and surf here, so more surf hostels will probably be built.

I love Guatemala and I really enjoyed my stay in the camp!
