It may sound like a silly name, but PiwiWiwi (Kiwi slang but we'll let them tell you the story) was born from one couple’s serious desire to share their love of travel and New Zealand with the rest of the surfing community. And, by looking at the reviews of their customers, it’s easy to see owners Anna and Niall have done exactly so.

It all started back in 2009, when the pair began traveling the world and quickly fell in love with New Zealand.A campervan was their home-base for some time, and Nial (who has an engineering background) set up a van perfectly suited to their surf-seeking adventures across the country.

Fast forward and the pair have become a well-loved and award-winning local business based out of Raglan, putting smiles on the faces of surfers from all over the world.Your surf-inspired campervan is waiting for you in Raglan, a small and world-renowned surf town serving as the perfect base for your trip.

The reeling left-handers and surrounding waves offer a range of options for advanced surfers, while beginners can stick to the beachies or opt for a lesson based on a good recommendation. They even offer to pick you up from the airport, so you really only start your adventure in the relaxing environment that this sea-side town is so well-loved for.

Each camper is fully-self contained, which means you have everything you need on top of your wheels. No campsites and no porterloos necessary. As a standard you’ll find a solar shower, equipped kitchen including a stove-top espresso, comfortable season-suited bedding, useful buckets, surfer friendly gadgets, like inner board straps and wet wetty buckets, a safe box and gear for dealing with emergencies.

There’s also a selection of extras like shortboards, longboards and bodyboard rentals, camp tables, GPS, fan heaters, snow chains or a child seat that can come at an added cost.Whether its New Zealand’s beautiful beaches, treks, waterfalls, vineyards or museums you’d like to explore.

They pride themselves on vans tall enough to stand up in, yet small enough to park easily. And just the right mix of comfort and function to make sure nothing is missing while your enjoying a road trip through arguably some of the most stunning scenery in the world.

Accommodation

As practiced and self-proclaimed campervaners, Anna and Niall promise you won’t need anything more than you’ll already find in their well-equipped vehicles.

You can add on extras like surfboard rentals, baby seats and GPS or let them know if there’s anything in particular you need before you arrive.

You can choose from two main vehicle types

Surf & Other Activities

New Zealand has become a bucket-list destination for surfers the world over. A place where awe-inspiring landscapes from towering mountain ranges to deep blue lakes meet beautiful beaches and often empty waves.

And, we have to say there’s few better ways to see these two islands, than by the convenience of your own home on wheels.

There’s two main islands, the North and South to choose from.

Both offering a plethora of waves year-round, from wedging beach-breaks to long-grinding points.

The West coast can get a littler harier, bigger and colder than it’s eastern or “easy” counterpart which lights up during cyclone swells.

As for islands, you’ll find the north is consistently warmer, but offer less consistent waves than the south.

But, the benefit of hiring a campervan over a larger vehicle or hopping from hostel to hotel, means you get to sample more of the coast and move to follow the swells, conditions and locations at your own pace. Whether that be down long stretches of highway, or little trails leading to hidden gems.

Ana and Niall are more than happy to provider insider knowledge, making suggestions on itinerary’s, giving tips on well-kept secrets and allowing you to make the most of your time in New Zealand.

Here are some of the spots you’ll find, depending on which island and time of year you’ll choose.

North Island

Shipwreck Bay - One of the best left hand point breaks in the world. A naturally occuring reverse superbank. This spot was the star in Bruce Brown's epic 'endless summer'. Shippies works by wrapping a solid SW swell around the headland so whilst it's rarely flat, it can be small but ideally suited to a longboard

Piha - Piha is northwest of Auckland and is the birth place of surfing in NZ. Morphing sand bars assist in creating a very reliable left hander. Lion Rock offers left and right options with backwash vectors from the rocks creating interesting scenarios. Some great beach breaks on the right day to the north of Lion Rock right up the beach.  Best at around 3-6 ft.

Whangamata Bar - The Whangamata Bar at the northern end of the beach is the main spot, producing a long peeling, left hand, sand bar beach break with north-easterly swells on an incoming tide. If the bar is crowded or the tidal flow is too hectic, you can simply move down the beach.

Indicators (Raglan) - A difficult paddle on a big day, best done from the relative safety of Whale Bay or the headland to the east of it. Indicators is the main break but depending on the size of the swell, another 3 spots can be found along this inlet.

Manu Bay (Raglan) - Manu Bay is a medium length left hander that ramps along a rocky point, nice longboarding wave.

Stent Road - One of the better right handers near Taranaki. A great wave easily accessible from the road. Stent Road can handle true size. The takeoff can be a little hairy and the wave will either bowl or fatten out before reeling into a long wall section.

Wainui Beach - Wainui Beach about 6 kms from Gisborne is the great spot for surfers of all levels . The best waves are found off the southern reefs , offering superb right and left breaks. The Island 1 km before Wainui has Gisborne’s longest tubes. There are two left hand reef breaks which work in big southerly swells.

South Island

Kaikoura - Kaikoura is a popular surfing destination, with quality reef breaks; left and right hand point breaks; and beach breaks all up and down the coast.  A couple of national compititions are held here every year. The main breaks here are Mangamanu and Meatworks.

Papatowai - NZ's premier big wave location. Not for the faint hearted, needs about 10ft+ to break and big, raw southerly swells from Antarctica bring freezing waters.

Matthias (January 2016)
I want to thank you for your efforts and the opportunity with PIWIWIWi was very exceptional. It was perfect!!! The car was excellent regarding its condition and special features (board rag inside, kitchen/camping equipment/cable for iphone to hear music in the car etc). Also the lessors (Niall&Anna) were exceptional in giving support, ideas and every special service I could have thought of (hanging out with them, rented a surfboard from them etc).

So It was 1000% awesome. And I have to say that I really love to rent a car from that lovely and supportive local surfer couple – and providing my support – instead of renting from a big impersonal rental company like the many others. It feels really familiar and just gives me a good feeling to have the chance to pay back.

So, if anyone wil ask you, I have to tell you that PIWIWIWI will always be my first choice. You will definitiely find nothing better than them.

Jenny (March 2015)

Anna and Niall are great, the campervan was very reliable, customer service both beforehand and during our hire was excellent (they answered loads of questions in detail), and overall they know how to look after their customers! Would definitely use them again and would definitely recommend.

Ky Phillips (October 2015)

“Firstly let me just say that Anna and Niall were amazing, from the initial contact right the way through the whole trip. I had a fantastic time travelling around the North island with Ruru (one of the Base Jumper Campervans), and I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to see New Zealand. After collecting me from the airport Anna and Niall spent plenty of time with me explaining the features of the van and some of the best spots to visit, they also provided me with a copy NZ Frenzy which is great guide book from seeing some of the hidden gems of the North Island.”

Taylor (September 2015)

“Such a great experience! Niall and Anna have done an amazing job with their small fleet of vans. They are very well maintained and have everything you could ever need. I should know after 6 weeks of living in one that there were no complaints or lacking of equipment. There was not one problem with the van during the entire trip! It started and ran perfectly every day, even after I put over 12,000 km on it! Starting off in Raglan was fantastic, one of my favorite towns in all NZ. It allowed for awesome first and last nights and a relaxing town to start the adventure, compared to starting in busy Auckland...”
