Asia is the world’s largest continent, by area and by population, covering over 44 million square kilometres and over 4.3 billion people. The continent contains over 48 countries and spans both Pacific and Indian Oceans. The major surfing areas within Asia include Philippines, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Japan, and Indonesia (see separate section). Asia is extremely popular for travellers due to the warm tropical climate found in most of the countries; it’s varied ethnic and cultural differences; and extensive historical background. Most Asian countries are also well known for being great value for money for the traveller.
Sri Lanka is a great value for money destination with an ancient cultural heritage; natural wonders & wildlife; adventure sports and tours; breathtaking golden beaches; and of course remarkable surf.
They have nearly 1600kms of palm fringed, sandy beaches; exciting and busy cities; and mountainous central highlands with lush tropical rainforests.
Accommodations in the surf areas cater to the budget conscious, but also offer chic boutique options for those looking for something a little more special.
Most popular areas for surfers are Aguram Bay and Hikkaduwa, where you’ll find beach front accommodation with the surf at your doorstep, or only a short distance away. These areas are also popular for snorkelling and scuba diving.
Where to stay?
Check out the stylish Romans Beach boutique hotel in Hikkaduwa; an exclusive hideaway with only 6 elegant rooms and walking distance to the main break.
Another option for couples is the Number One Mirissa, offering panoramic views of the waves and beach, and with direct beach access and a great right hand break just below the resort.
In Arugam Bay, the Stardust Beach Hotel is well run and clean and close to the main break.
For a cheap surf trip, staying right on a world class break, chill out at Sagana Resort in Siargao
Adventurous intermediate to advanced surfers on a tight budget should put Taiwan Surf Tours on their travel agenda.
Sri Lanka’s surf is year round due to the 2 distinct monsoon seasons it has on its opposing east/west coasts. Arugam Bay to the east is the best known surf area and receives beautiful morning offshore winds from May to October. During the opposite months of November to April the swells sweep up to the western side where Hikkadua is a most popular for surfers.
The most consistent surf in the Philippines is found in Siargao, where you’ll find the world renowned “Cloud Nine”; but with over 7000 islands there are sure to be unnamed breaks all over just waiting for adventurous surf explorers. July to November is the best time to go to Siargao to catch the swells from the Pacific.
Taiwan, only 160kms off from the mainland of China, gets year round swell due to the south east typhoons and north east monsoons. It’s only recently been earmarked in the travel bibles of the mainstream surf traveller, but with year round warm water; friendly locals and exciting food and culture it is set to be the next surfing hot spot. Visit the south coast from May through to October; or the east coast from November through to April.
