Surf & Other Activities

Sri Lanka’s east coast is quickly becoming known as the land of the playful and often pumping right-handers.

From March until October, the swell begins battering the east coast and lighting-up spots like Arugam Bay’s main point and the number of surrounding waves suiting everyone from beginners to advanced surfers.Possibly the biggest problem with this side of the coast are the relentless onshores, which tend to kick in at around lunchtime. But early-sessions and evening glass offs, mean you’ll have plenty of time to surf day in and day out.

Surfing spots around the area include:

Main point: Arugam Bay’s most well known, easily accessed and visible wave. When it’s on, and the sand is good, it’s a great, down-the-line quality right-hander that stretches for seemingly forever. Further up on the point is especially better suited to experienced surfers, who can can handle fast and hollow sections. Less capable surfers will tend to hang a little further down the point to surf the gentler waves.

Peanut farm: A must for all levels. High quality waves.

Whiskey point: Great for beginners, fun waves and sunrise sessions.

Potuvvil point: One of the longest waves around, usually starts working later into the season.

Elephant rock: Beautiful little waves in an even more beautiful location.

Arugam baby point: Best for beginners.

Okanda: A swell magnet, and good for big swells.

Lighthouse: Remote, romantic with a small sand break.

Crocodile rock: Dependent on the swell's mood and conditions.

Arugam Bay

The main centre of Arugam Bay is lined with little shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. While it’s small in comparison to other places, the village attracts plenty of backpackers and European surfers looking to have a good time in Sri Lanka. Dance parties, beach raves and reggae nights are common place, as is live music and special dinners for romantics.

There’s a handy selection of clothing shops, food stores and local street food too.

Arugam Bay’s remote locations means its surrounded by untouched and unspoilt bushland towards the eastern border of the Yala National Park. The area can be very dry and arid, but some of its jungle will host the biggest populations of leapords in Sri Lanka, many bird species and a huge number of wild elephants.

Long trips down stunning rivers, exploring the jungle, or picturesque lagoons are a great way to spend the day.

While visiting old temples, open rice fields and deserted beaches will keep you busy from dusk till dawn, even if there are no waves.

Okanda-Paname Temple Rock Tour: Early morning trip to Paname Village, driving through the sanctuary with a half-hour climb to the famous high temple rock. From here you can see views of the whole bay and visit the beautiful Ukanda beach.

Lahugala Elephants: Visit the Lahugala National Park where you can watch the elephants in their natural environment.

Lagoon Tour: Two hours boat or canoe ride through the giant lagoon

(Elaine, March 2015)

“I stayed for 4 nights and felt like I didn't want to leave this place. As a solo lady traveler, Miki and Jo really took good care of me. They were so nice to show me all around town and always made sure I have everything I needed during my stay.”

(Jarrad, April 2015)

“Stayed for 4 nights while I was in Arugam Bay and was in an amazing location and super friendly staff. The atmosphere was so chilled - surrounded by animals, lush bushland and only a short distance to the beaches of A Bay. Awesome value for money at this resort, very clean and spacious rooms, friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended!”

(Thomas, July 2015)

What a wonderful place. We stayed four days at the elephant road resort - the aim was to have a relaxing time and this ticked all the boxes. The location is just perfect, tucked away just off the Main street its easy walk and explore everything Arugam has to offer on foot. We had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend.
