Royal Huahine Resort has recently been voted #7 in the TOP 20 RESORTS in the OCEANIA REGION in the 23rd Annual Readers Choice Awards by Conde Nast Traveller Magazine.

Open in March 1999, Royal Huahine is the most recent luxury hotel to be developed in Huahine, the "Garden Island". The resort features garden-, beach-, lagoon- and deep overwater bungalows, all facing west towards the islands of Raiatea and Taha. The bungalows are very spacious, among the largest in French Polynesia. The main building, which is home to Ari'i Restaurant & Bar, is built over the water to make the most of the breathtaking views of the lagoon.

Huahine's turquoise waters provide the perfect setting to relax and unwind in this tranquil part of French Polynesia. Guests can sunbathe on the white sand beach or lounge beside the free form swimming pool. Outside of surfing, a variety of activities & excursions are available to choose from - such as island tours, picnic trips, sunset cruises, and snorkeling in some of the most spectacular lagoons. Royal Huahine provides complimentary scheduled boat transfers to and from the main town of Fare and local cultural activities are available on site.

Royal Huahine is welcoming families as well as couples. Child-minding and babysitting is available. Kids also stay and eat for free.

Royal Huahine Resort presents a lavish Tahitian Buffet featuring Polynesian delicacies, barbequed & grilled meats and fresh fish, a variety of salads and a tempting selection of freshly prepared desserts. After dinner, Tahitian musicians accompany traditional singing while the men dance the exotic Tamure and the women perform the fluid hand-story dancing of the Aparima.

Surf & Other Activities

Huahine is known for good surf and the consistent and perfect shape of the waves. Two of the best breaks are within a 10-minute boat ride from the resort. Royal Huahine operates a surf shuttle to the breaks at additional cost. (Boards not supplied, you will need to take your own).

The most well-known waves are at Ava Mo'a Pass, also known as Fare Right, and at the pass opposite Fitii. In the south, Parea is the place for surfing.

Conditions are good all year, but March through to October is when conditions are most consistent. Waves are frequently about 40 to 140m long, fast and hollow. All the northern sites are easy to get to, but require a paddle of at least 20 minutes. Fitii is a very long, 45-minute paddle without a boat. The bottom is rocky and sharp, and there is a lot of coral on the beaches so it's a good idea to wear booties. Surfers should bring their own boards as there are no rentals on Huahine. The island is becoming more popular, and the locals are justifiably protective. It's very important to become acquainted with the locals and to be friendly and respectful if you want to surf here.

Huahine is rich in traditions. More has been done on this island to restore the archaeological sites than anywhere else in French Polynesia. The culturally and historically minded will want to take an excursion to the northeast coast village of Maeva, the ancient capital of Huahine. Maeva is a rich and exciting archeological site where the remains of prehistoric villages and ancient stone temples, "Marae", give clues to a civilization that existed at least 1000 years ago.

Otherwise you can just relax poolside, snorkel in the lagoon or explore the island by outrigger canoe or kayak. There is a full-service spa where you can be pampered with island treatments, massage and yoga instructions.

Other Surf Experiences
Piolina (June 2012)

No amount of words will do this place justice. This resort is the perfect place to relax and get away from the world. Only accessible via shuttle boat, it's like a hidden little paradise. While the property is a little dated, the over-water bungalows are huge. The bathrooms feature double sinks, bathtub and separate shower. They also have a small fridge and sink and the decks are really spacious with a dining area and even a shower. There is really good snorkeling around the bungalows so you don't need to go too far to see tons of tropical fish. The grounds are beautiful with lots of tropical trees and flowers, perfectly manicured. Internet is only available in the lobby and it wasn't really fast but other than that everything was top-notch. The restaurant serves the finest food in Huahine and if you are lucky you will see manta rays swimming by at night. We also tried the spa and got one of the best massages ever with Tahitian oils. The staff was amazing. They went above and beyond the call of duty to make our Polynesian wedding truly memorable. Special kudos to Vatea, who became just like family during our stay. This is a very, very special place and it was really hard to leave. Paradise doesn't even begin to describe it.
