This secret corner of the Earth awaits you, offering memorable and authentic experience for couples, families, and surfers alike.

There is still a place where time forgot. Where the crowds haven’t yet reached, where the guidebooks haven’t ruined, where local children splash and play in a pristine lagoon lapping at golden sands just inside of an empty, funneling right-hander.

On the lesser-known island of Savai’i, a short ferry ride from Upolu in the Independent State of Samoa (formerly Western Samoa), a road leads to a lost corner of the earth called Aganoa Beach (roughly translated: The Place Where No One Lives). Here, at Aganoa, lies a surfer’s — and non-surfer’s — paradise. A consistent, world-class reef break peels into a channel just 50 yards in front of a restaurant perched at the sea. A gentle, idyllic lagoon lined with a picture-perfect beach hugs the verdant, manicured grounds in seemingly endless and fragrant bloom. Eight airy, newly-renovated and self-contained fales (bungalows) doze near the sea.

While primarily Aganoa caters to surfers (only 8 at a time) seeking its guaranteed uncrowded waves, Aganoa — like Savai’i itself — is also the perfect place for the family. With an array of activities from kayaking, fishing, snorkeling and more, both on-site and island-wide, Aganoa is a stress-free destination without the exorbitant price tag that most destinations of this caliber attach. Couple that with Samoa’s beautiful Polynesian culture and people — and you may never want to return home…

With empty waves just outside your fale, in this private piece of Eden surrounding your companion or family, it’s not hard to see how — thankfully — time forgot about Aganoa. And moreover, how easy it is to forget about time.
Accommodation
Every aspect of the Aganoa Lodge Samoa guest experience is designed to immerse you in Savai’i’s pristine natural environment. The goal is to transport you to another time and place. A world of open air and open spaces, of falling asleep to the soft patter of rain on a tin roof or waking to the kiss of a light trade-wind breeze sliding off of the ocean.

Unplug from your busy, overbuilt world and experience something perfect. Perfect and simple.

The rooms are simple. Eight stand-alone, open-air fales (bungalows) each surrounded by its own “privacy screen” intended to give you your own perfect carved out piece of paradise. Each unit in constructed almost entirely of reclaimed timber and lava rocks collected on-site, and each features a king or queen sized, four poster mosquito-netted bed, en suite bathroom with open-sky shower (with Molton Brown amenities), power outlets, safes and private porch decks for relaxing or watching the surf (literally steps from the lagoon beach).

Surf & Other Activities

Samoa receives south swell all year round from both Antarctic ground swells from New Zealand and locally generated tropical activity. These swells come from deep in the ocean and pound Samoa’s coral reefs, often creating steep takeoffs and hollow tubes. Generally, Samoa is recommended for intermediate to advanced surfers due to its powerful, heavy surf and sharp, shallow reefs.

The island of Savaii is a swell magnet with surf on the south, east and north coasts. From late March to November, huge swells created by lows from Antarctica pound the south coast. From December to February, northern swells also travel from Hawaii to hit the north coast. The south coast of Upolu boasts some superb surf spots such as Aganoa Right and Left

On the north shore of Savaii,  surfers can check out Pastor Point and Turtles

Aganoa Right and Aganoa Left surf breaks are within paddling distance of the beach, and for the pick of the other possibilities Savaii Surfaris operate two 12-seater vans and a 15-foot fibreglass runabout.

Wherever the waves are happening on Savaii the best possible access is provided by van and/or boat - all included in the surfing package. Local staff and a roster of selected Australian surfers assist in the daily operations, and their dedication and knowledge enable Savaii Surfaris to provide the very best in service to visiting surfers.

South Coast Breaks

AGANOA RIGHT

Savai’i’s premiere wave and just a quick paddle from the beach at Aganoa. Like Salani on neighboring Upolu island, Aganoa Right is extremely consistent, breaking any time of the year and at all sizes from 2-10ft+. The Right also has multiple take-off spots for any surf-level and is optimal at mid though high tides. Wedging on 2-3 different peaks, the Right offers a hollow tube on takeoff, then walling into the inside, and barreling again before the channel.

AGANOA LEFT

Also in front of the restaurant at Aganoa and a short paddle from the Right, the Left peels around the reef pass and into a channel on the western side of the beach. Depending on the swell direction, the Left has a gorgeous barrel as well.

K-LAND

An intoxicating reef pass eerily reminiscent of the famed G-Land on Java. Surfable from 4-12ft+, the wave is a long, wrapping mix of both hollow, barreling sections and rippable walls. Just 30 mins from Aganoa.

MIDDLES

Just across the channel from K-Land, Middles is a playful, bowly split-peak peeling into a wide channel. Across the channel from the left is also a shorter but very fun right when you get frustrated by the crowd (your other 4 buddies) at Middles.

PASTOR POINT

A long, extremely fun right 30 minutes up the northeast side on the corner of an outer reef (that’s still paddle-able). While the wave still barrels, it’s a bit softer than Aganoa and perfect for any skill level.

COCONUT GROVE

An hour away from Aganoa and the reliable “hedge” against the “devil wind” that hits the house waves straight onshore, Coconut Grove is a mercurial setup that can be fun and playful or downright terrifying. A series of left-hand setups that wind across a shallow reef, the wave can be as hollow as any wave in the Pacific or as rippable as any wave, well, anywhere. That said, every session at Coconut Grove ends the same way: marveling at the black lava, the blue water with the taste of coconut water (a gift from a friendly villager) on your lips as empty wave after empty wave peels down the lonely reef. Then blindfolds go back on (literally) for the drive the main road and the long drive back to Aganoa.

North Coast Breaks

  • AB's: Long walled mellow right.
  • Blue Pools: Perfect left on big swells.
  • Cookie Monster: Sunset style peak right-hander for big swells.
  • Dougie Walters Stand: Long walled left.
  • Pastor Point: Fun workable right.
  • Pau Pau's Left & Right: Pair of peaks.
  • Runway Rights: Short barrelling right.
  • Super Sucks: Hollow right.
  • Turtles: Consistent, easy long-walled left.
  • Vaai Right & Vaai left: With good swell direction both these breaks offer great barrels.
  • Whiterocks: Left-hander that works well at 4 - 6ft on a big swell.

Surf Guides: A good surf guide understands the ocean.

A great surf guide understands his guests.

At Aganoa Lodge Samoa, the guides are the key to success, and are responsible for countless guests riding the best waves of their lives

They invest seriously in hiring and developing the best surf guides in the world. World-class surfers who focus on enhancing your experience, not their own.

They ensure your time is maximized, and match a break’s degree of difficulty with your own capabilities. Aganoa Lodge's guides are all about safety. They are qualified and well-trained in emergency procedures.

ALS continually evaluate their safety and risk management processes in consultation with industry-leading authorities.

Guidance, hazard identification, equipment, emergency plans…Aganoa Lodge Samoa are serious about prevention, and making sure your surf travel experience is the best it can be.

Other Activities:

Kayaking and SUPs: Aganoa offers sea kayaks for guests wanting to roam the lagoon, kayak fish, or venture further along the coast

Olemoe Waterfall: Just 10 minutes inland from Aganoa is a gorgeous freshwater pool at the foot of a thundering 100 foot waterfall. Bathe in the cool waters or leap from the jump-rock in front of the falls.

Fishing: Borrow a pole and cast right from the lagoon, or take a full-blown day or half-day trip with Lee, our resident fishing expert, to prime spots not far from Aganoa.

Snorkeling: Snorkel and dive gear is available for guests to explore the colorful and lively coral reefs that thrive right off our shores in the always crystal clear waters.

Alofaaga Blowhole: A natural phenomenon just 30 minutes away. Bring a few fallen coconuts, throw them in the blowhole and watch them lift off!

Cycling: Borrow one of our many beach cruisers and go for a leisurely ride to down our down to the waterfall. Or if you’re feeling ambitious, we’ll arrange for an afternoon downhill ride down Mt. Silisili.

Fiafia: All of our guests are welcomed to Aganoa with an ancient, traditional Samoan feast/celebration called fiafia. During fiafia guests get to taste an array of every Samoan delicacy from palusami to underground oven-baked pig.

Games: Take an afternoon off from the surf and entertain yourself with one of our many games. From bocce, to horseshoes, and croquet to table tennis and darts, they've got you covered.

Eco excursions: In comparison to the neighboring island of Upolu, much of Savai’i is undeveloped and the interior rainforests remain wild and virtually untouched. Aganoa Lodge offer hikes and eco-friendly guided tours through the rainforest or around Mt. Silisili.

Samoa was an amazing, untouched paradise. At Aganoa Lodge we were made to feel like were part of a family. Our surf guides Alex and Jessie went out of their way to make our holiday special and put on some amazing waves as well as acted as our hosts.

Gregor (March 2017)
Lovely place for a family stay. Not a pure surf-destination - probably only 5 hours surfing per day depending on the tides. Many other activities including snorkeling and cultural tours. Wife and non-surfing daughters really enjoyed their stay.

Michelle (March 2017)
The Perfect Wave arranged everything from start to finish and didn't have any problem answering any questions we had. We even got a response to a email late one night which is pretty unusual.

Samuel (December 2015)
We wanted to take a sneaky week away for some surf and sunbaking (for my non surfing girlfriend) but finding flights and the right accommodation for what we needed fell into the too hard basket! We found the Perfect Wave online and made an enquiry, Bruno contacted us straight away and organised everything... The location - Aganoa Lodge in Samoa was exactly what we were after! We will be in touch again for the next surf trip.

Amy (November 2015)
Aganoa lodge was awesome! Waking up and checking the surf right from your bed is the best! Plus swimming with the turtles!!

Bradley (September 2015)
A great F264trip was had by all the boys, lots of waves, food and laughs. Our consultant was very flexible and swapped the dates, destinations, trip lengths and travellers, a number of times and everything still went off without a hitch. Thanks for a trip to remember.

Charlie was great in the organization of the trip. He was on the ball with everything and was always quick to respond to any info I needed. The perfect wave were great.

Brad and Yvonne(March 2014)

Thanks to The Perfect Wave, Sylvia in particular, for organising such a great holiday.I was hoping to surf some quality, uncrowded waves (who wouldn't?!), and my girlfriend wanted a relaxing place where she could read her book, go for a swim and snorkel. The staff at Aganoa (Keith, Lanu and the rest of the gang) were great, the location was amazing, and the surf was awe-inspiring. They even had a surf guide, Keegan, who would paddle out with you and let you know the best tides/swell etc to optimise your surfing. For three days, I was the only surfer staying there! Our only regret was we didn't book the holiday for long enough...Wonderful waves, nice quiet tropical location, friendly staff, lovely food, and a good feel for Samoan culture...What more could one ask for? Thanks to all involved.
