Located near the base of the Akakura Onsen ski and snowboard resort in Myoko (Niigata Prefecture), Kougakuro is a Japanese style ryokan offering traditional hot springs and a Japanese-style vacation experience. A ryokan is a traditional style inn, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. Continuing this tradition, Kougakuro offers Japanese style rooms, along with piping hot meals for the weary traveler. Both western and Japanese cuisine is available, with some of the favorites including fresh sashimi (sliced fish) and the traditional style breakfasts. There's a great common area for relaxing in the evening.

Kougakuro is pretty much in the center of Akakura Onsen, one of Myoko's best places to stay for skiers looking to spend plenty of time on the snow. The area is one of the best spots in Japan for winter sports, and Kougakuro is well placed to accommodate for tourists hoping to take advantage of the region's serious powder. The owner, Mieko, can help organize almost every aspect of a successful ski trip, including getting hold of discount ski lift vouchers, finding decent priced ski classes and equipment rental. Off the slopes, Myoko is also renowned for its hot springs, known in Japan as onsen. Kougakuro has its own on site onsen, and there are others around town.

Accommodation

Kougakuro is a traditional style ryokan, meaning you can expect traditional style rooms. Most rooms include tatami (woven straw) flooring, along with Japanese sleeping futons. Guests are asked to trade their shoes for slippers when they enter, and most guests tend to don a yukata, a type of indoor robe (basically, a light kimono). The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, and there is also plenty of space in the common areas to spread out and relax.

Some of the hotel's other features include:

  • Wireless internet (Wi-Fi connection in guest rooms, lobby)
  • Bar with fireplace
  • 100% natural onsen hot springs
  • Two minute walk to the ski hills
  • Located in the center of Akakura Onsen with restaurants, bars and shops nearby.
  • Friendly English speaking staff who understand the needs of international visitors.
  • Absolutely sumptuous cuisine prepared with fresh local ingredients
  • Onsen facilities
  • Clean and spacious Japanese style rooms with modern amenities
  • Relaxation space/common area where people can chill after a day of skiing.
  • Within walking distance to the ski resort
  • Ski lift ticket discount coupons for guests

Access

By train

From Tokyo, take the Nagano Shinkansen to Nagano Station (90 minutes), then the local Shinetsu Line to Myoko Kogen Station (40 minutes). From Myoko Kogen Station, Akakura Onsen is a 15 minute journey by bus or taxi.

If you are travelling from Narita Airport, take the Narita Express train to Tokyo Station.

By car

Drive north through Nagano on the Nagano/Joshinetsu Expressway up into Niigata and get off at Myoko Kogen IC. From there Akakura Onsen is a 15 minute drive.

Surf & Other Activities

The countryside around Myoko is peppered with ski areas, many of which are among Japan's best. Kougakuro is right near the Akakura Onsen ski area.

The Akakura Onsen ski area is large and has something for skiers and boarders of all levels. There are gentle family friendly slopes, long intermediate runs, exciting steep runs and tree runs for the adventurous. Off the slopes, there are also plenty of great hot springs (onsen) to warm up in. Mieko can provide advice on some of the region's best onsen. Of course, the hotel also has its own great onsen on site, meaning you don't even have to leave the premises to get the traditional Japanese experience.
