Surf & Other Activities

Surfing

Nicaragua has a lush tropical climate with two distinctive seasons. A wet rainy season from May to December and a dry season from January to mid-May. There are three main climatic zones: a wet tropical, a wet and dry tropical, and a mild highland. Average annual precipitation in Managua is 1,140 mm and average temperature ranges are from 20 degrees Celsius to 44 degrees Celsius all year.

They are blessed with perpetual offshore winds in the southern region of the country, allowed by Lake Nicaragua (Lago Cocibolca). Dominant NE trade winds from the Caribbean are accelerated across Nicaragua’s narrow land mass by the absence of mountains in the southern region by the presence of Lake Cocibolca, a massive inland lake. The offshore winds turn the swells into clean, hollow lines and almond-shaped barrels at many points which are abundant in Nicaragua’s Pacific coastline. With solid S swells and some of the best points, rock reefs and sandbars in Central America, this is a recipe for perfection.

Nicaragua is the ultimate surfing frontier in Central America. Its approximately 300+ kilometers of Pacific Coastline is a swell magnet for SW and S hemisphere swells which average 4-8 feet, and sometimes more on the biggest swells. Nicaragua is yet un-crowded. They are privileged to surf and enjoy world-class waves in a vast array of beaches and surf spots, which are spread out all over Nicaragua’s pacific coastline. Primary swell source is SW and S hemisphere ground swell, for which the orientation of our coastline is ideal. With solid and consistent swell, they hold some of the best surf in Central America.

Pelican Eyes Surf Retreat is an amazing option to experience surfing in Nicaragua! Offering ocean view accommodation and being only steps from the main surf breaks, they also offer surfboard rental, daily transport to Playa Maderas or Playa Hermosa and a professional surf guide. For both beginners and experienced surfers, they have put together the ultimate surfer packages.

Pelican Eyes Resort is amazing. It's far and away the nicest place I've ever stayed in Nicaragua. The staff was incredibly helpful and professional. The food and drinks were excellent -- their seafood and wine are not to be missed. The accommodations were grandiose. My private villa had towering ceilings, a full kitchen, a dining room with a large, tasteful painting by a local artist, air conditioning, large comfy beds, three bathrooms, a private driveway, and an expansive veranda with rocking chairs and epic views of the Pacific. Beautiful tropical flowers were everywhere they obviously pay close attention to gardening and landscaping the grounds. The three different infinity pools are spacious and have amazing views of the town of San Juan and the bay, which is a short five-minute walk down the hill. The highlight of my stay was sailing on their private yacht to a secluded beach. Snorkeling, sailing, free drinks, ceviche, and tajadas... and then the captain dropped us off at a beach break for a surf on the way home and someone from the resort came and picked us up after sunset. I didn't make it to the spa but they have a spa in the resort that I heard was amazing and inexpensive. My friend went and got a treatment from their acupuncturist and chiropractor. My stay at Pelican Eyes was especially relaxing and comfortable. This type of resort is extremely hard to find in Nicaragua. The people in charge are doing a great job. I would definitely go back.

Love this place. In fact, we really love Nicaragua. I have been there multiple times for work - but we decided to make a vacation of one trip and stay in San Juan del Sur - what a good idea that was.Pelican Eyes is fantastic. The food, the service and the amazing views. A real gem of a vacation spot in one of Latin Americas most under-traveled countries. A must see place and a must visit country.
