Drifters Hotel & Beach Restaurant is situated on the palm-fringed beachfront at Narigama, the widest and most popular stretch of beach at Hikkaduwa, with good surf breaks (Beach Break, Main Reef) and miles of golden beach at our doorstep. The hotel is close to Hikkaduwa’s best-known bars and party spots – but far enough away to guarantee a good, quiet night’s sleep!

Three hours’ drive from Colombo airport, Hikkaduwa is the tourism hub of the south-western Sri Lanka, internationally renowned for its surf and as a centre for diving. With lots of local sights to explore, there’s plenty to see and do in and out of the water – or just take it easy and soak up the sun. Close to the historic town of Galle, and the world heritage listed Galle Fort, Hikkaduwa is an ideal base for exploring the south coast.

Surf & Other Activities

The waves in Hikkaduwa area are usually from 3-6ft, offering both lefts and rights. The swell in this area is pretty consistent during the season (November to April) and offers options for all levels of surfers. The waves are fun & mellow, although sometimes a bit fickle.

The main break called Main Reef offers A-shaped waves and you can ride them both ways. For relaxed surfing, Beach Break offers decent left- and right-handers for beginners, while Benny’s and Inside Reef are more intense and challenging left-handers.

Drifters is opposite the Beach Break and about 300 metres south of the Main Reef Break. Guests can check out the swells of both breaks directly from the beachfront restaurant, so they don't have to leave the hotel to see if the surf is up.

Surfing lessons and hire of surfboards and boogie boards can be arranged at a surf school next door to Drifters. They work with them to provide surfing services, such as board hire and lessons, for guests.

Surf Transfers: they can take you to Midigama, Kabalana and Unawatuna for a half-day trip or to Midigama, Kabalana and Mirissa for a full-day trip. Their vehicle is an air-conditioned Toyota HiAce minivan with roof rack and the cost is per vehicle so they can take up to 6 people for the same cost. During the south coast off-season (May-Oct), they offer surfing packages to the east coast (Arugum Bay) - this can include airport pickup, one or two nights in Hikkaduwa (can see Galle, south coast) then Arugum Bay for as many nights as needed, then back to airport. Please ask us about tailored packages.

Fresh, fragrant, flavour-filled... indulge yourself in a foodies’ paradise. Sri Lanka is famous for its food, from sumptuous seafood to spicy curries, all made with the freshest of ingredients. Fancy feasting on a platter heaped with freshly caught seafood or just snacking on a simple jaffle? Drifters Beach Restaurant offers an extensive menu with plenty to tempt the tastebuds, from traditional Sri Lankan dishes, seafood straight off the boat, to western favourites.
And how better to savour such delightful dishes than watching the waves roll in while you eat. The beachfront restaurant offers the best food and best views in town. Or join the crowd to enjoy a movie or the latest sporting events shown in the restaurant on our satellite TV. Step into the restaurant straight off the sand – or let them serve you as you relax on the beach on one of the sun beds.
Drifters’ beachfront bar is the ideal place to cool off with an ice-cold beer or enjoy the sunset sipping a tropical fruit cocktail. Meet a friend or make one, or just sit back and watch all the action – in the surf and on the beach.

Other Activities

Other activities available in Hikkaduwa include snorkelling, scuba diving, PADI accredited diving lessons, deep sea fishing, whale watching trips. I'd highly recommend The Perfect Wave for sorting out all your needs when it comes to a surf trip. Great knowledge, highly responsive communication and excellent follow up made for a great experience.

Have used perfect wave 3 times and they are always professional. Just got back from Drifters in Sri Lanka. Owner was fantastic and all transfers organised by perfect wave made life much easier. Have travelled to different destinations with perfect wave and have always had seamless travel arrangements in place. Have already booked my 4th trip for next year.

Holly Floor (March 2013)
My experience with Perfect Wave was very good. I think mainly because of Sylvia. From the moment I sent through the enquiry email, Sylvia was always so quick to respond. The process was made very easy because of her.

Hols (January 2013)
We had such an amazing time, the hotels and transfers you organised were wicked as well. Thankyou so much. Sri Lanka is a really special place, so stoked we got to see it before tourism explodes over there. I took a bunch of photos, I'll send a few through to you guys in the next couple of days. Thanks again Sylv, hope you're super well. Hols.

A great location on Hikkaduwa beach, right outside the main learners surf break. The staff are friendly and efficient, Lalith and his family can help to organise drivers, tours etc. The restaurant is great with good prices, fresh seafood and cold beer. The pool is great, warmer than the sea but clean and good for kids. Rooms are simple, clean, hot/cold water showers, mosquito nets(not needed on our stay). The best rooms are 9 and 10, looking onto the pool and sea(although fan and not AC). The rooms downstairs get hardly any breeze, being much warmer at night. Overall a great place to stay and while away a few days in the sun.

Jacques (November 2012)
Drifters Hotel is a great place to stay, we were staying with friends and had the to upstairs rooms facing the sea. This is really nice, but you spend most of your time on the beach or downstairs porch were you can get drinks. If you do not care for paying extra its awesome. The rooms around the pool is also fine. The staff at Drifters is great, we had no other people with us in the hotel and they were really friendly and helpful. The owner is always around and always willing to help and make suggestions. The manager with the boys are great and was good having them around always making an effort to make sure you happy, comfortable and have a drink :)Nothing better to wake up the morning have a look at the surf, hire a board next door (left or right of Drifters) walk out have a surf and have breakfast on the beach. The main surf spot is a little walk down the beach, but the beach in front of drifters is the best and much bigger, along the other side it is more rocky and lots of beach erosion. The food is nice at Drifters, but it is also nice to have a walk around and try different things all around, it is just so easy, no shirt only boardshorts, out your hotel on the beach and finding the place you feel like having lunch, dinner or just a drink.
