Australia’s East Coast As Good As It Gets!

The first week of July 2019 delivered some of the cleanest, most enjoyable mid-size waves of the year to date.
The other two highlight swells of the year on the East Coast were the Cyclone Oma swell back in late February, and the May 7 South Tease.
Outside of the two above mentioned highlight swells, there was a massive, but generally windblown south swell that arrived right on cue during the first week of winter in June.
Besides those swell events, it hasn’t really been a very memorable year in terms of the frequency of sizeable standout swells on the East Coast of Australia.

The early July 19 swell shared many characteristics of the epic July 2001 E swell event, the year a youngish Mick Fanning drew powerful, mature lines at flawless 10ft Lennox Point.
Whilst the early July 19 swell never reached the same size as the infamous July 01 swell, it definetely shared some memorable characteristics. That is, both swells were E by ENE in Sydney and the winds were similarly favourable from the Western quadrant in Sydney and surrounds on Monday and Tuesday July 1 and 2, and from the favourable southern quadrant in northern NSW and SE Qld.
The swell built straight out of the E in Queensland and Northern NSW during the last week of June, peaking on Monday and Tuesday July 1 and 2, but it was already solid by the weekend of June 29/30.

Further South in Sydney and surrounds the swell was in the 4-6ft range from the ENE with accompanying W winds. Unfortunately later that week the wind shifted south, there were still waves, but the quality just wasn’t the same.
