A great right-hander breaking over reef can be found just below the Number ONE Mirrisa. The location of the point between the rocks and a hill means its waves are hardly affected by onshore winds. It's a fun wave that holds up to about 5 foot. Mirissa also has a beach break ideal for beginners and boogy boarders. It's less crowded than Hikkaduw and it has a mellow atmosphere in a tropical location. Surfboard hire, lessons with great teachers and complete surfing tours can be organised from Number One Mirissa.
Wild peacocks proliferate the area, turtles come to lay their eggs on the beach at night and richly coloured birds sing the type of songs that remind you you’re in a tropical paradise. Mirissa is one of the world’s hotspot for whale and dolphin watching and pods numbering in their hundreds have often been recorded Species include Blue whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales and the occasional Killer whales too. Dolphin types include Bottlenose, Spinner, Risso’s and Striped. Turtles, Bluefin tuna and flying fish are also regularly seen. Sightings occur a few miles off Mirissa and the best time to see these glorious animals is early in the morning.
