Hotel Goryukan is something of a local establishment, with nearly a century of history as one of Hakuba's most prominent lodges for winter sportspeople. It’s no surprise why its been so popular over the years. This classy hotel offers both western and Japanese style rooms at the base of the Happo-One ski area, with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. They have some wonderful hot springs, plus a cosy bar, ski storage (winter only), gift shop and even a beauty clinic. The wifi connection isn’t available throughout the hotel, but you’ll get decent reception from any of the common areas.
Hotel Goryukan's claim to fame is its long history of providing accommodation for winter sportspeople looking to experience the Japanese Alps. In the 1998 Winter Olympics, the hotel hosted US and Norwegian ski competitors. In fact, the hotel has been hosting sportspeople since its opening in 1933, when the current owner's grandfather founded what was initially a lodge for hikers. Today, the Goryukan is something of a local establishment. Goryukan is conveniently located near the base of Happo-One Ski Area. Relatively close to Hakuba village's center, it's a convenient base for skiing and sightseeing.
They offer both western and Japanese style rooms, with all the amenities you'd expect, along with some of the best views in town. They also have on site hot springs, massage room and gift shop.
Meanwhile the onsite restaurant can cook up some pretty solid Japanese fare, much of which includes rice grown on the premises. In addition, their meat and all vegetables are locally sourced from around the Nagano prefecture. Local dishes from Shinshu (the old name for Nagano) are typically cooked with pork, beef and mountain trout in innovative multi-course Japanese meals using seafood that enable you to enjoy the taste of all the Shinshu seasons. After a day on the slopes, it's a pretty good way to sate a serious appetite.
Hotel Goryukan offers three types of rooms, including both western and Japanese styles. These rooms include:
Japanese style rooms side facing the Northern Japanese Alps
These rooms are 18 meters squared (with 10 tatami mats). The rooms command a panoramic view of the Northern Japan Alps through a large window, and on clear mornings the mountains often turn pink with alpine glow, known as a "Morgenröte".
The Western style rooms (non-smoking) facing the Northern Japanese Alps
These rooms are significantly larger, with 35 meters squared. The rooms likewise offer a panoramic view of the Northern Japan Alps through a large window, and the alpine glow reflected on the mountains can be seen in the morning.
The Japanese style rooms facing Satoyama
The last type of room is about 18 meters squared (10 tatami mats).
These rooms have a serene panoramic views of the mountains east of Hakuba opposite the Northern Japan Alps. These are slightly cheaper than the other rooms.
Common facilities include:
- The two story atrium lounge
- Water bar
- Massage and beauty clinic
- On site hot springs
- Gift shop
- During winter, they also offer a ski locker room where you can store your skis/snowboard gear.
Surf & Other Activities
With its long history of catering to sportspeople, it's no surprise many of Hotel Goryukan's visitors today are skiers and hikers. The hotel is well placed to take advantage of the nearby Happo-One Ski Area, though there are plenty of other slopes around Hakuba. Although the region's biggest draw card is skiing, there's more to Hakuba than just winter sports. When the snow melts in summer, the region becomes a hiking wonderland, with enough trails to keep even the most intrepid explorer occupied for months. The region is also fairly well known for its hot springs, known in Japan as onsen. Locals say onsen have all kinds of health benefits, along with being a great way to relax.
