Quick Facts
Macaronis Resort is a perfect option for those looking for more privacy than a boat charter, and the freedom of being of land. Also the resort option is more suitable for those wanting to travel with a non-surfing partner or family - with access to more facilities and activities.
Some of the exciting upgrades for 2019:
- No more overnight ferry: Mentawai Fast transfers - Just 4.5 hours.
- Greenbush only a 15-Minute Boat Ride with a new multi-purpose high-speed transfer vessel.
- Doctors on site - Starting in March 2019, qualified doctors are staying as special guests.
- More flexible trip lengths.
The resort is located right on Silabu lagoon, across the bay from the world famous left-hander, Macaronis, which is commonly known as one of the best and most consistent wave in the Mentawais. Boat charters frequent Macaronis break, but its consistency and perfection is worth a little bit of company and it’s certainly not the only wave in the area.
From 21st April 2010, a Mooring Bouy System has been implemented by the Mentawai Government Tourism Department, which limits the boats allowed to park up in Maccas bay to a maximum of 2, which is good to keep down the number of surfers. Also, from 5 to 45 minutes speedboat ride away, you’ll find Maccas Right, Bowls Right, Bat Cave Right, Green Bush Left and Silabu Left...among others. If you’ve watched any Indo surf DVDs, you’re likely to have seen a few of these waves in it.
Macaronis Resort is situated on the edge of picturesque Silabu salt water lagoon, just across the bay from legendary Macaronis wave. Tidal movement keeps the lagoon clean and cool to swim in, with magnificent sunsets that occur over the lagoon at the end of each day.
Macaronis Resort was recently refurbished with exceptional attention to detail and luxury. Located on the ground level is the resort Bar & Restaurant with professional chefs serving 3 meals daily inclusive in the holiday package, and a full bar serving a variety of beer, Australian imported Wine & mixed drinks plus snacks all day. The lower-level is also the community hang-out area with indoor & outdoor seating, ping-pong table, billiards, and other games. The large paved pool area has several seating areas, beautiful views, and sun lounges.
All Guest Suites are on the second floor, elevated 8m above sea level with open veranda sea views, air-conditioning, hot water, WiFi, and much more. Proper acoustic and thermal insulation through-out the building allows guests to sleep peacefully while others enjoy a late night beer.
Mark, the Aussie operator from Tasmania, is accompanied by other surf guides who are living the dream. It’s hard not to get jealous; but they are doing it with care for the village so that they’re benefiting from the presence of the resort. One of the major issues facing Indonesia is poverty, which is spread across its 17,000 plus islands, and existence of these remote island resorts are important in the fight against it.
Macaronis Resort not only donates a fixed amount per guest per night to the local village, but also employs the villagers to work at the resort, purchases fresh produce from them and also contributes toward local community projects. Mark has been in the Mentawai Islands since March 2001. He worked as a chef and surf guide on charter boats for three years before leaving to establish a land-based resort nearby his favorite wave.
