    • Great snorkeling

It’s hard to not immediately fall in love with the place. Beautiful, traditional thatched-roof villas are just meters from sandy beaches leading into verdant island forest.

However, Baha Baha Villas is more than just a postcard perfect picture. The nearby breaks are some of east Indo's best: Yoyo's out the front and Scar Reef, Supersuck, and Tropicals a few minutes away. The snorkelling and fishing isn’t bad either, but the real draw card here is the variety and quality of the surf breaks you can score.

The villas themselves are spacious and breezy, and come with wide beds, flatscreen TVs and reasonably large bathrooms. Between the villas, there’s meticulously cultivated gardens. There's also an outdoor pool, along with an on-site restaurant that serves up some solid local cuisine. After a day on the beach, it’s also possible to kick back in the bar, or take advantage of the swimming pool.

For exploring the island, Baha Baha also has bike hire, and staff can provide advice on some of the best places to go for a ride. They also have a great range of gear for hire for anyone interested in water sports.

Surf & Other Activities

Baha Baha Villas is located right near some of the region’s best beaches and surf breaks.

Out the front of the villas is Yoyo's, a consistent and fun right that picks up plenty of swell. There is always a wave there. It consists of two rights, one a wedge peak breaking off a cliff face, the other a long walled right reef in the middle of the bay. Yoyo's is the wave of choice when everywhere else is small. Usually best between waist-high to well-overhead, but is occasionally surfed up to triple overhead and bigger.

If the swell picks up and you are looking for some of the legandary West Sumbawa reefs, the challenging lefts of Scar Reef and Supersuck are a short drive north. Other breaks include Little Bingin, Donuts and Benete, all a great alternatives to avoid the crowds.

Scar Reef - A long-walled left peak where you drive into several backdoor sections, all offering tube rides to write home about. Best between 2-10ft. There is also a smaller right-hander on the inside reef on the bigger days.

Super Sucks - Some say it’s the longest, most intense tube they’ve ever ridden. Breaking over a live coral reef, this wave reels faultlessly for 150 meters. Get barrelled from takeoff to exit. No top turns here when it’s on. Best between 3-6 ft.

Another alternative is the great left and right break at Tropicals. These waves on opposite sides of the same channel are less intimidating than the big name breaks, but still offer real quality.

The West Sumbawa region is best known for some amazing snorkeling, but other watersports are also possible.  Elsewhere, the island interior is great for biking, and Baha Baha Villas offers bike hire and advice for any keen explorers. There’s also some decent hiking for anyone who wants to take a break from the beach.

I scored an epic week in West Sumbawa, Indonesia. A  magic part of the world – definitely put it on your list to tick off. I’m already planning my next trip to Baha Baha and taking the family... The kids will love the pool and gardens at Baha, exploring the waterfalls, and learning to surf on the grom waves in the lagoons.
