Quick Guide to an Eco-friendly Surf Trip & Sustainable Tourism
Travel can be an exciting adventure and a great way to explore different cultures around the world. However, travelling can also be at the expense of our environment between carbon emissions and our use of resources. Luckily, ecotourism can be easy and we have 10 quick steps on how you can make earth-friendly choices.
Pack Light!
Limit your items to the things you need. The heavier your luggage or carry-on would be on a plane, train or automobile, the more fuel and greenhouse gases that will emit into the atmosphere.

Choose eco accommodation
Do the research and stay at a hotel or resort that’s ethical and responsible. Reputable hotel brands such as Six Senses, Soneva & S-Resorts have introduced eco-initiatives such as organic gardens that provide a garden to plate culinary journey, composting and recycling, no single-use plastic bottles or straws, recycled construction materials, a bio water irrigation system and a water refill station.

Eat and Shop local
Support and promote the communities in the area by making sure the places you eat have locally sourced produce and ingredients. By choosing local, you are minimising the carbon impact of mass food production.

Bring your own cup and cutlery
Avoid disposable packagings such as plastic forks and cups and bring a KeepCup or reusable tumbler for your drinks and/or your own cutlery and straw when you’re eating out. That way you can reduce the amount of plastic you’re using and that means less trash going into landfill.

Use public transport where you can
If you can help it, public transport is the eco-friendly option for getting around. Collective transportation consumption reduces the amount of carbon emissions by 55 -75 percent.
Reduce your trash
Bring and dispose of any non-recyclable packaging in a small jar when you’re travelling. The trash you will see in your waste jar will keep you disciplined and give you an idea you mindlessly dispose of each day.

Say NO to plastic bags
It’s very tempting to accept all purchased items in a plastic bag. Make a habit to bring your own tote or shopping bag and say no to plastic bags during each transaction. With each plastic bag you avoid, less plastic will go to landfill or end up in our oceans.

Avoid bottled water
Depending on where you are, reduce the amount of single-use plastic you can and try to refill your reusable bottle.
Unplug and save electricity
Before you head off on your holiday, save electricity by unplugging unnecessary appliances that are still connected to the power. Not only is it a waste of energy, but your bills will thank you later too.
