Surfing PNG on board the PNG Explorer – trip one.

Words and photos by Chris Peel.

Trip one is run and done and we’re back in the harbour with smiles from ear to ear.

The forecast for this trip was pretty marginal as the North Pacific has been a little slow getting underway but Captain Rigby has a few tricks up his sleeve and we made the most of the conditions ducking and weaving to our different locations.

There was a nice bump from the NE to start the trip which gave us fun shoulder high waves to get our first guests (and us) into the groove. Mid trip we headed to a remote outer island to scope a left wave magnet. The swell was there but the wind betrayed us so we traded the afternoon of surfing for a afternoon of diving and fishing. Both options produced multiple high fives and smiles with quotes from the boys from Hawaii calling it the best diving they have ever done!

Fishing and diving was followed by a BBQ at a beach rated in the top 50 beaches of the world … stunning views, clear water, ice cold beer and some seriously tasty food and not another soul around.

Towards the back end of the trip a moderate North swell began to pulse and produce those days we all come to PNG for. Tubes were ridden, rails set, spray thrown and the stoke of surfing shared.
Looks like the North Pac has some action in store for the next trip so things are heating up in PNG

We have one remaining vacant trip for the 16/17 season so if you would like to add this amazing zone to your checklist, click here.
Cheers from PNG Explorer
