Two weeks surfing in the Maldives in June

Last year I visited the Magical Maldives for the first time with The Perfect Wave Surf Experience: I hosted and photographed TPW guests surfing in the Maldives for two weeks aboard the Carpe Vita and then stayed on for Surf Music In Paradise featuring Tex Perkins and Murray Patterson at Kandooma Surf Resort.
I enjoyed it that much I put my hand up to host two photography charters this month and once again I stayed on for Pete Murray’s SMIP gigs at Kandooma.
On day four of my charter, we anchored in the channel just off Thulusdoo. It is a great little set up. On one side of the channel, Chickens wraps and bends while on the other, Cokes peaks off a small island before racing through a shallow end section.

Most of my first week the wind suited Cokes, the right, but on a calm windless day and the right swell direction, both sides can fire simultaneously. We had plenty of 2-3ft surf the first week, good fun but not quite enough for the end section at Cokes to really open up.
I really love the afternoons in the Maldives.
Usually the late is your third session of the day, the body’s warmed up and limber and you’ve had your fill of waves already so the vibe is tropical, any wave you get is a bonus.

Yesterday we dropped into Sultans late in the afternoon.  At 2ft, it’s a cruisy right that runs down a small teardrop-shaped island lined with palms.  Our dhoni (small Maldivian boat) anchors up in the channel with an esky full of beers, a refreshing reward to sign off after your last day of the day.  It’s pretty good living.
