Surfers are definitely one of the most nomadic of tribes.

Whether we’re on recreational surfaris with friends, cruisey island hops with a partner, styling at a family resort, on a surf business trip or just moving onto greener pastures for variety’s sake, we are by nature a gang of explorers constantly in search of The Perfect Wave.

Everyone who is subjected to the pressures of modern society needs some outlet, some form of escapism in their lives. As surfers, adventure is ours.

The haunting dream that triggers most surfers imaginations on a flat day is the idea that somewhere, right now, on this vast planet, there is a perfect empty wave going unridden.

The challenge to find good waves as our planet becomes more and more accessible through improved communication and indeed transportation is nowhere near as daunting as it must have been to our adventurous predecessors.

For the most part, the hard work – the discovery and exploration of zillions of epic set ups – has been done by previous generations, not to mention the advent of surf forecasting sites and Google Earth.

However, that’s not to say there aren’t still countless unspoilt set-ups still to be pioneered (Hell the Snake only broke the internet just over 12 months ago.) If you watch the charts or even just take an old school vacation in a set time period, the rewards are still their to be reaped.

Nowadays many surfers are relatively conservative in where they choose to go on holidays looking for guaranteed waves. Most crew only have a few weeks annual leave to play with and understandably opt for the proven spots despite the possibility of crowds.

It is hard to go past The Mentawai, Banyaks, Telos or The Maldives for consistency.

There will always be that hardcore element – the adventurers amongst us who are willing to rough it and take the road less travelled in the quest for empty barrells.

This blog isn’t about to tell you where or when to go, because that is pretty much your journey or adventure, this little blog and deliberately curated photo edit is more aimed at motivating even the most apathetic surfer to go searching for waves and maybe a little cultural hit, because as the title reads, “Not all those who wander are lost.”
