Cruising the crystal blue waters of the archipelago since being built in 1999, the Perfect Hamathi is a stalwart of the Maldivian charter fleet.

Fully refurbished in 2014, with 5 twin cabins this 20m (67ft) motor yacht comfortably caters to groups of 8 to 10 surfer. It has everything you’d expect from a quality surf charter: a lounge area with flat screen TV, DVD and modern sound system, a full bar ($50 off your bar bill for Perfection Pass holders), 2 sundecks for relaxing by day and telling surf stories by night, and an outdoor dining area perfect for watching all the action in the water while you eat.

What really sets a trip on the Perfect Hamathi apart from the rest is the dedication of the captain, surf guide and crew to finding the best waves on offer with the least amount of surfers in the water, no matter where that happens to be. The captain has spent most of his life navigating up and down the island chain.

He’s teamed up with Martey, the most experienced surf guide in the country. Martey has been described by guests as “the man for good, uncrowded waves”, “a superb guide who knows every break intimately”, and who is “constantly pouring over charts and buoy forecasts, putting the options (out there) with local knowledge about how things might favor the intricacies of each different setup…” Basically, with Martey aboard the chance of being in the right place at the right time in the Maldives is as good as it gets.

As one guest put it, he’s “priceless”!

When we say the Perfect Hamathi will take you wherever you need to be to score the best surf, we mean it. With the “Total Maldives” trip option the entire archipelago will be your playground. Martey and the captain have carte blanche to follow the swell wherever from the big name breaks in North Male to the secluded spots in the ultra-consistent Meemu, Thaa and Laamu Atolls or the rarely surfed waves down south in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll area if all the conditions come together for those breaks to turn on.

Wake up at the crack of dawn and have breakfast while watching the sunrise and checking the surf, catch a ride out to whichever flawless wave is firing on the day and surf until lunchtime.

Once you’ve had your fill of the mix of local, Sri Lankan and western recipes on offer at the lunch buffet, relax in the lounge or grab a quick nap on the sundeck or in your air-conditioned cabin before heading back out for the afternoon session. When you can’t paddle anymore, head back to the boat and enjoy a refreshing beverage at the bar before another trip to the buffet for a delicious dinner, where any fresh fish caught that day will accompany the other dishes. After dessert it’s time for a coffee or a nightcap before heading to bed to recharge the batteries for another day of surfing fantastic tropical reef breaks, or snorkeling or diving in pristine crystal clear water, fishing for any of the wide variety of native species, or visiting local islands for a taste of Maldivian culture and to catch a glimpse of some indigenous wildlife, depending on what the wave and weather forecast happens to be.

You’ll probably be surfing though, since most often Martey will have you headed somewhere overhead and offshore!

Plenty of surfers have had the pleasure of surfing their way through the Maldives on the Perfect Hamathi, but one in particular stands out. He’s definitely not the best wave rider, but he sure had one hell of a good time celebrating his 39th birthday aboard. Follow in the footsteps of Steve-O from Jackass, a.k.a. the #MaldivianBadass who pulled his first “really rad floater” during the trip. Rest assured even if you can’t do a backflip off the top deck like he did, you’ll most likely put on a much better show on a surfboard.

And what did he think of the Perfect Hamathi? Two words: “It rules.”
