Region Information

South America is a vast continent and home to one of the longest waves in the world.  Waves can be found along the Colombian coastline, Ecuador through Peru and down to the cooler waters of Chile and then on the Atlantic side, Brazil, Paraguay and Uraguay and also Argentina.  Peru means Chicama and the longest left in the world, along with the chance to visit Machu Piccu, this is the ideal destination for the surfer / adventurer. Ecuador is an amazing country with some of the best waves concentrated around the Kuta-style mini surfing town of Montanita.  Chile has some powerful waves hitting the cold Chilean Coastline, it’s consistent almost all year around, it’s uncrowded but spectacular scenery when you look at the coastline from the water.  Brazil is home to the passionate Brazilians who are proud of the many kinds of waves all up the Atlantic coastline and across to the beautiful island of Fernando de Noronha.  An amazing country with very friendly and welcoming, happy people.

South American favourites

The beach town of Montanita in Ecuador is a very easy and international place to come to learn to surf or improve your skills in the water.

Peru is ideal for the adventurous travelling surfer looking to catch the longest left in the world.

Brazil is a really fun place to visit.  It’s noisier in the water than out and some of the beachbreaks south of Rio are powerful and barrelling, The island of Fernando de Noronia really is out of this world.

Limitless fun and waves in South America – the ultimate travel destination.

Ecuador is exposed to both North and South Pacific swells.  The peak surfing season is from November to March with glassy waves and light winds and consistent waves.   The water temperature is warmer here than further south thanks to the Panama current.

It’s not difficult in Peru to find quality, uncrowded waves.  Chicama breaks mainly on sand and is consistently off-shore.  The north swell season hits in summerwhen it’s sunny, the winds are light and the water temperatures warm up.  The south swells are usually bigger and more consistent than the north swells and the peak south swell season is from March to November. From September to March, the surf is better in the southern-central region of Chile.  The water temperatures are cool so take a full suit unless you’re further up north.

Located just south of the equator, exposed to north and south Pacific ground swells, Northern Perureceives world class surf year-round. The north swell season coincides with summer and it is sunny with less wind and warmer water temperatures, unlike central and southern Peru where most days require at least a spring suit. Just south of Cabo Blanco two currents collide producing extreme differences in water temperatures at breaks only a few kms apart. In general, the waves in the area are practically perfect with fast walls and magic barrels that rarely exceed 6-10 ft. The south swells are actually bigger and more consistent than the north swells, but north Peru’s headlands and points make for more perfect waves. The peak south swell season is from March through to November.

The best time to explore Chile is between May and September where the northern beaches are barelling and powerful waves are pushing in.  From September to March, the southern-central region of Chile sees quality left-hand points that break over sand/volcanic rock bottomes.  The water gets increasingly colder in Argentina and Chile the further south you go, and therefore usually less crowded as well. The powerful Humboldt Current generated in Antarctica brings constant surf to the Chilean coast. Waves are also generated by wind coming from low-pressure centers off central Chile.

Surfing conditions in Brazil  are relatively good all year around but the best time is April to October for swells. From April to October, southern Brazil catches east to south swells produced in the Antarctic. From November to March, the north of Brazil gets the northern swells.
