Next time I go on a surfing holiday, I’m really tempted to go on an all-girls surf trip!

I love surfing with other girls, it gives me inspiration! It’s great to watch them surf and it really improves my surfing; we move so differently from the guys and I always think if she can do it, I can do it!  When you surf with other girls, you’re not conscious of trying too hard, you can be yourself and push your own limits.  It’s a different buzz all together.

It’s great seeing girls paddling out where I live in Hossegor, especially in the wintertime, I always smile and have a chat – girl surfing in Europe reminds me a bit of how it must have been when surfing started to get popular around the world – we’re still a pretty small group here in Europe, there are heaps of girl-surfers in Australia and California but here in Europe we are few compared to the guys but we are becoming more abundant gradually and it’s amazing to see. In fact just the other day, there were 5 of us girls in the water and only 1 guy out – in all my 20 years of surfing, that’s the first time the girls have ever out-numbered the guys in the water – love it!!

So I’m thinking I will either jump on  the next All-girls Mentawai surf trip that’s coming up at the end of March or the all-girls Maldives Surf Charter in July!!  It’s not an easy decision to make, should I go on an all-girls Surf Charter at the best and biggest time of the year for the Maldives or should I go to surf the Mentawai islands and stay at the Aloita Resort & Spa?  Hmmm decisions, decisions;)  I’ve been on a surf charter before and I loved it, but I was on a boat full of couples so it wasn’t as much fun as it would have been with a cool bunch of surfer girls!  Surf Charters are great because you really maximise the amount of surfing time in the water.  There’s nothing to do except surf and I love that.  You literally come in for food, more sunscreen or if the tide’s changing, then back out there – it’s almost impossible to just stay on the boat and relax when the waves are pumping!  The Maldives is absolute paradise, the colour of the water, the fish, the reefs that you see when you’re surfing over them – it couldn’t be any better!

On the other hand it would be good to check out the Mentawai too!  I’ve always wanted to do an all-girls surf trip in the Mentawai and especially at the Aloita Surf Resort as I think it would be less-intimidating to surf with girls instead of guys.  I know that the biggest swells hit in summer time mainly in July and August so this all girls surf trip at the end of March should be just perfect.  It’s kind of nice to have your own space on a landbased camp, you can just chill out with a book or walk around and find a good spot to sunbathe – on a boat, on the otherhand, there’s nowhere to run and nowhere to hide!

Having said that all I want to do is surf so I think I’m going to go with the Surf Charter option in the Maldives – see you onboard maybe….
