After a record run of 19 days in a row above 22 degrees during May and hardly a swell worthy of mention at The Perfect Wave HQ in Sydney, it was great to finally enjoy the first real groundswell of winter this week. Clean, 5 to 8ft lines marched up the coast from the south on Monday June 16. Pity the offshore westerlies felt bitterly cold after such an unseasonably warm run, and most of the northern beaches were closing out in the straight south swell.

Victoria was pumping too, but with winter comes plummeting land and water temperatures. I ventured south to find a line up that wasn’t closing out, but it was crowded. Look closely at the dark blue water colour and the steamer clad surfers in the below line-up photo taken on Monday, and then look at the warm, turquoise blue water in the photos taken by Joel and Coops in the Maldives recently. Then look at Joel’s photo of Manly.

Maldives vs Manly. Warm vs cold. Peak season vs south swell season. Reef breaks vs straight-handers. No contest really: Escape winter now!

As air and water temperatures drop further in Australia over the next month or two, the Maldives surf season will be hotting up. Picture postcard palm-fringed 3-4ft line-ups, complete with 30 degree Celsius water and land temperatures, combined with peak season Indian Ocean SSW swells.
